Design and fabrication of an innovative railway platform bridging system

ABSTRACT :

In this fast paced world with spectacular advances in science and technology, need for innovative systems for transportation is vital. This project gives a solution for transport of men and materials with less effort and energy between the railway platforms.

The system uses a rack and pinion arrangement actuated by reversible motors to extend and retract the slab that is placed between two platforms. Hand rails and balustrades are provided and a roof is fixed over the slab. A microprocessor unit controls the motor based on the train signaling device.

As the signaling device shows green, means that the train is in-station, so the motor is not actuated and remains slab remains in the retracted position. As the signaling device shows red the slab is extended to bridge the platforms, once the slab touches the other platform the gate opens. These gates are stationed between the doors of the train so it does not interfere with the passage of the train compartment door. As the signaling device turns yellow the slab is retracted.
